One of Europe’s largest independent cinemas turns 20 this year, and this unique institution is aiming to raise £250,000 for a thorough refurbishment. The Showroom Cinema is an essential part of Sheffield’s cultural scene, and welcomes thousands of film-lovers through its doors each year.

Showing Sheffield a good time since 1995

Since opening in a 1936 art deco former car showroom back in 1995, the cinema has gone from strength to strength and grown to become one of the most important independent cinemas in the world. Alongside showcasing some of the most exciting independent film offerings from around the world, Showroom also hosts festivals and events, as well as helping to nurture local talent. To celebrate 20 years, the cinema is holding special anniversary events throughout the year alongside sponsorship and fundraising opportunities.

It’s not about the money Kennings Building Shoreham Street

The Showroom’s parent company is a registered charity which supports educational and cultural provision for Sheffield and the surrounding area. Both the Showroom and the Workstation provide facilities, training opportunities and engagement for developing the region’s independent film sector. Operating independently and as a charity, the Showroom doesn’t’ exist for profit, but is instead motivated by a true passion for cinema and the potential effect it has on its viewers.

The grand refurbishment

In order to carry on making the Showroom experience magical for the 200,000 visitors each year, a full refurbishment is in order. The venue’s four screens are to be refurbished, including new seats and carpeting throughout, in addition to updated foyer areas and toilets. Modern lighting and equipment will also be installed, allowing for enhancement of the Showroom’s calendar of live events.

How to help

As an independent venue, every little helps, as all commercial profits go back into the cinema. But the refurbishment is a big task, with £250,000 needing to be raised. Showroom is offering film-lovers the opportunity to name a seat, with each sponsor’s name going on an engraved plaque on their seat. For just £150 for individuals or £300 for businesses, the package also includes a personalised naming certificate, two free cinema tickets, an invitation to the unveiling of the refurbished screen and acknowledgement of your support on the Showroom website.
