Awards and adulation do not replace a loved one, however they can put a smile on your face as the work you are doing now goes a long way to cement the legacy of those that you are remembering and this is the case for Reuben’s Retreat from Manchester who are working even harder to make a better future for children who are in the same position as the charity’s namesake.
Recently voted charity of the year by Denton Golf Club and honoured at a ladies night, the Manchester based charity is growing rapidly and as with all charities, they need your help to maintain that growth. Forming in 2012 after the sad passing of 23 month old Reuben – who like any other child that age was full of life and laughter at his age – until he was diagnosed with a brain tumour that was making him extremely sick. After numerous surgeries, the little man was transferred to the PICU unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital in an attempt to help his organs recover from such an invasive set of procedures. Sadly Reuben passed away in his mothers arms not long after. Diagnosed with an ATRT, an Atypical terratoid rhabdoid tumour, this rare cancerous growth took Reuben from his family and only affects 4 to 5 children in the UK each year. Very few show the symptoms. In order to secure his legacy and help families in similar positions, Reuben’s parents set up a charity in his name, forming a retreat in the North West countryside for children who have life limiting conditions and allowing their families to be with them at all times, providing support on every level.
Having supported 101 families inside the past two years with everything from care to bereavement counselling and are looking to grow even more with your help. Having already trended socially in the city last week with their #bedhead day campaign, the team are looking towards Valentine’s Day where they will be challenging you to take the Northumberland No Ego Torch Challenge. A five mile, ducking and diving fun run across Northumberland in the night as you tackle it whilst wearing your head torch. Teaming up with No Ego Challenges, you’ll be able to start the run at Wallington House, get on the gravel and footpaths trekking through forests and parkland getting dirty and muddy all in the name of charity. A perfect way for lovers to have fun and raise cash and of course single people can join in too.
This is just one of the many activities taken on by Reuben’s Retreat. They have so much happening and are looking to extend their family with some new positions.
